Turmeric and Avocado Hand Woven Scarf
The Turmeric and Avocado botanically dyed scarf is born from a partnership between Mayamiko and Amma to support women empowerment.
Beautiful handwoven scarf, created for Mayamiko by women empowerment partner workshop Amma in Sri Lanka.
Based in the highlands of Sri Lanka where a team of mother makers harness the power of food waste, fallen leaves and ayurvedic plants to make natural colour to yarn dye these stunning scarves.
Produced under the masterful gaze of weaver Mary, this square scarf is dyed with natural turmeric and avocado, giving it a joyful feel. Each scarf is finished beautifully with a hand-stitched rolled hem.
Circa 110cm x 110cm square.
Handwoven, naturally dyed cotton. Each scarf is un unique and there will be natural variations in hues from the images.
Hand wash fabric in cool water with a ph neutral, eco washing soap. Don’t use stain remover or harsh chemicals. Dry flat and store out of direct sunlight to preserve the colour.
Mayamiko has partnered with AMMA for these unique, limited edition products. Amma trains and employs mothers living in the Sri Lankan highlands to turn food waste and plants into natural dyes. Sustainable textiles, ethically handmade.
They create beautiful plant dyed textiles, encouraging consumers to 'open their eyes' to this ancient art and become aware of the negative impact that the fashion and textile industry has on our world.
Products are made in a rural workshop, using handwoven cotton and 100% plant dyes using food waste such as avocado stones and pomegranate skins from hotels and restaurants along with foraging for fallen leaves and sourcing medicinal plants to produce our dyes.
Everything evolves around the dyes, this is why things take time. Small batch production means every piece is one of a kind
The mothers employed by the project come from the tea estates that surround the workshop. They are from low income backgrounds and are now principle contributors to the household finances. We could not be prouder of this, as they become role models within their communities.
Naturally-dyed fabrics need to be cared for differently to synthetically-dyed fabrics. All dyes eventually fade over time including synthetic ones! Natural dyes will alter and change in shade and tone over a period of time. To preserve the life cycle of your fabric we recommend storing your fabric out of direct sunlight, washing below 30C using an eco washing soap (chemical based soaps may alter the colour) on a hand wash machine cycle.
